On August 27, 2018, a nurse who was changing in one of the two women's locker rooms that the ICU of the Mateu Orfila hospital has , in Mahón , on the island of Menorca , repaired a shoe box, specifically that of some clogs like those used by health personnel. It was placed on the lockers, very damaged, cracked, and from it stood a black garbage bag. It is just the box that we reproduce along these lines. If you look at where the arrow points, you will see what the nurse discovered after notifying a colleague and examining the contents together. The garbage bag had a hole just up to the target of a mobile phone that was hidden inside and that at that time I was recording how nurses took off their street clothes and put on their uniforms.

The toilets alerted security personnel and began searching for the owner of the phone. The shock among the staff was great when Dr. José Claudio LE appeared and acknowledged that it was his. The doctor in question, 44 years, Peruvian of origin but with residence years ago in Spain, reputed specialist of the ICU, affable, attentive, educated, even handsome, was the depraved who was recording them.

José Claudio LE was arrested that same day - he is provisionally awaiting trial - and the Judicial Police Department of Mahón initiated an investigation that closed a week ago with surprising results. Especially because of the bulky number of victims and the long time the doctor would have been recording them with impunity. "I don't think there has been an equal case in Spain," says one of the researchers.

The agents have counted 101 affected, of which they have been able to identify 93. The majority, 83, were recorded within the ICU of Mateu Orfila, where José Claudio worked: in one of the two female changing rooms that the unit has, in the toilet for the exclusive use of the staff, in the doctors' rest room and also in the bathroom for the relatives of the sick, so that among the victims there are women outside the workforce.

The doctor, the investigation maintains, was done with the keys of the two female locker rooms of the ICU, arrived soon to work to enter them before their companions and gave him the play of his mobile. "He started recording in the changing rooms and the shower and ended up in the toilets," sources of the case explain. «The most complicated part has been to contact the victims, show them their videos and explain the circumstances. There are some that have fit better and others worse, ”they add.

Dr. José Claudio LE made the videos with one of the two iPhone he had, hidden in the box or in the bins of the services. "In some cases I used to record them, I recorded with both of them to have two viewing angles ...", they detail in the Judicial Police Brigade of Mahón.

After the arrest of the doctor, his two homes were registered - the usual residence and others on vacation - and his hospital locker. All videos - 2,300 in total - were found on a hard drive that he kept in his box office at the Mateu Orfila.

One of the issues that has surprised researchers the most is the meticulousness with which José Claudio had archived the images, perfectly cataloged. They were distributed in folders labeled with the name of the place where the recordings had been made: toilet if it was in the bathroom, dressroom if in a locker room. And within them there were other sub-folders in which each woman was identified with a code name that has cost to unravel. "I used a kind of acronym, a word that included some letters of real names and surnames and that has taken us a year to decipher," sources continue.

José Claudio made the 2,300 videos over four years, between 2015 and August 2018, when it was discovered. There is another loose recording dated in 2004, in which it was not possible to identify the victim or the place where the images were taken, but that the Police suspect that it could have been in Peru , the country where Dr. LE was born

Of the 101 victims, 83 were recorded inside the hospital, but not the remaining 18. These, according to the investigation, were recorded at the home of José Claudio L. E, who is married to a Spanish woman and is the father of at least one girl.

The hospital staff Mateu Orfila keeps a scrupulous silence about the case. "It's a very small place," one of the nurses excuses. The secrecy is partly due to the deference to the wife of the detainee, who works as a doctor in the same center.

As soon as the events were transcended, the management of Mateu Orfila suspended José Claudio from employment and salary, withdrew his name from the list of specialists of the UCI and deleted from his website the images in which he posed with the specialists of this service, including the colleagues he recorded. His passport has been withdrawn and an order for restraint from the hospital and the victims is placed upon him at the request of the Balearic Autonomous Community Advocacy , which has been used as an accusation representing twenty nurses. Some have preferred not to report and others have done so on their own. He also accuses the Balearic College of Nursing .

The defendant has collaborated with the investigation and, according to some sources, would be undergoing psychological treatment to overcome this addiction.
