Crashed between the tables of the guests fell Juan Miguel Diaz Rodelas , the canon of the Cathedral of Valencia. No one could do anything to save the life of this priest who choked on a piece of meat just an hour after officiating the wedding he enjoyed the invitation as a guest. To consecrate a marriage to receive the extreme anointing with olive oil from the kitchen.

The events occurred last Saturday when the canon of the Cathedral of Valencia and guardian of the Holy Chalice, after officiating a wedding with another fellow priest in the Church of Santo Tomás de Valencia, moved invited by the families to the lunch that was held in Aníbal Field (Puçol).

During the meal, the priest who accompanied him, who also co-hosted the ceremony, noticed that he could not breathe and when he tried to accompany him to the bathroom he collapsed. Several doctors and a medicalized ambulance came to his aid, but the priest did not respond to the resuscitation maneuvers, so his partner requested oil from the kitchens of the premises to be able to administer the extreme anointing. Subsequently, the Local Police and the Civil Guard initiated the investigation, whose conclusions will be known after the autopsy. The first hypothesis was that of choking with a piece of meat, but it is not ruled out that it was a consequence of a previous heart failure.

Díaz Rodelas was born in 1950 in the town of Arico Nuevo in Tenerife and moved to Valencia to study theology. In 1976 he was ordained a priest in Ontinyent and went through several parishes of districts of Valencia.

Doctor in Biblical Sciences since 1993 and since 1999 canon in the Cathedral of Valencia, he was professor of the Faculty of Theology of Valencia, of which he was dean in two periods, from 2005 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2015 and professor of the Pontifical Institute Juan Pablo II and of the Diocesan Institute of Religious Sciences , according to the Archbishopric of Valencia.

Currently, he was president of the Board of Trustees of the Imperial College of Orphaned Children of San Vicente Ferrer. Author of numerous books and articles in specialized magazines, Díaz Rodelas was a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission , also of the Spanish Biblical Association and of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain. He also served as Secretary of the Technical Committee for the Translation and Edition of the Holy Bible in the Official version of the Spanish Episcopal Conference.

His funeral will be officiated this afternoon at the Valencia Cathedral by Archbishop Antonio Cañizares.
