Polls closed Sunday in Tunisia's second round of presidential elections in which independent candidate Kais Said and the head of the "Heart of Tunisia" party, Nabil Karoui, will compete.

Fabio Massimo Castaldo, head of the European Union's mission to observe the presidential elections in Tunisia, said that the voting during the morning was conducted in a smooth manner, in which the electoral laws were respected, and there were no clear violations.

Castaldo added that the EU mission had examined the lack of observers for candidates or observers at a number of polling stations.

Video footage showed elderly and elderly people racing to cast their ballots, while young people were expected to vote higher in the afternoon.

Al-Jazeera correspondents in a number of voting offices in the districts of the capital, Ariana and Kasserine said that the turnout appeared to be higher in the first hours of the first round and in the legislative elections, pointing out that the vote is taking place quietly and with the deployment of security forces.

Abroad, some 400,000 Tunisian voters continued voting for the third and final day.

The percentage of voters abroad reached about 14% during the past two days, and the Electoral Commission expected to increase the turnout by the end of the third day of the poll.

The independent candidate Qais Saeed came in first place during the first round with 18.4% of the vote, compared to 15.6% for second place Nabil Karawi.
