US President Donald Trump has said his administration has been asked to fight alongside the Kurds in northern Syria.

Trump announced in a speech in Washington that the Kurds are evacuating the border strip, which Turkey intends to secure along its borders.

He continued: "Let the Turks manage their borders, I do not think that our soldiers should be there."

He added that US soldiers should not be in that area to protect a border between two countries, while the United States has not yet been able to guard its own borders.

"If Turkey does not commit to protect minorities and take responsibility for ISIS prisoners in northeastern Syria, Washington will impose harsh sanctions on it," the US president said.

He added that the United States had lost many of its soldiers in Iraq to no avail, and spent there trillions of dollars. "We have to withdraw our troops from endless wars. We have been in Syria for 10 years."

Trump said the situation in the Middle East is now less secure and stable than before the US intervention in Iraq on the pretext of possessing weapons of mass destruction. "I told the military commanders that our troops, who remained in Afghanistan for 19 years, should return," he said.
