10 October 2018 Anti-mafia operation between Acireale and Aci Catena, in the Catania area. Eighteen people were arrested and detained by the district attorney connected to the Santapaola-Ercolano gang. They are accused, in various capacities, of mafia-type criminal association, extortion with the aggravating circumstance of the mafia method, mafia-political electoral exchange, attempted murder, possession for the purpose of drug-dealing and illegal possession of weapons. Among those arrested was the former regional deputy Raffaele Nicotra known as 'Pippo', former UDC. 200 police officers of the Catania Provincial Command took part in the blitz.The investigations, conducted by the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command and by the Company of Acireale, have allowed, among other things, to ascertain, also thanks to the declarations of some collaborators of justice, responsibility for belonging to two historical groups of Catania, as well as the practice of lace against various local entrepreneurs over several years. To the X-rays various local electoral consultations for which there would have been the interest of the mafia and in particular that linked to the Catania cosca of Cosa nostra.
