"The dialogue that [President Lenin Moreno] promotes lacks credibility." These are the words of the communiqué issued Friday, October 11 by the main indigenous organization of Ecuador, Conaie, after a new day of violent demonstrations in the streets of Quito.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador added that it would only negotiate with the government once "that will be repealed" the decree removing fuel subsidies.

Earlier, the head of state had launched, in a televised speech, an appeal to the leaders of Conaie to "dialogue directly" in order to "find solutions". "It is essential to bring down the violence [...] The country must know that we have the will to dialogue", added the president.

In its statement, the indigenous organization responded that "the dialogue that the national government says promotes is based on one of the worst massacres in Ecuador's history".

Clashes between protesters and security forces have killed more than a week and injured more than 2,000, according to the office of the Public Defender of the People.

Friday, new clashes erupted in several places of the capital, squared by the police and the army.

Thursday, Conaie had ended the contacts made with the government, mediated by the UN and the Catholic Church, and called to "radicalize" the protest actions.
