by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 12 October 2019In Ecuador the access roads to Quito International Airport have been blocked by the Authorities but the indigenous movement has decided to accept dialogue with President Lenín Moreno.

The main indigenous organization in Ecuador announced its intention to participate in the "direct dialogue" proposed by President Moreno, after ten days of unprecedented social crisis caused by economic reforms geared to austerity in exchange for a loan from the International Monetary Fund.

"After a process of consultation with communities, organizations, peoples, nationalities and social organizations, we decided to participate in direct dialogue with the Head of State," said the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) in a statement.

Meanwhile, new violent protests against President Moreno, with Molotov clashes and bombs took place in the capital Quito for the tenth consecutive day. The police fired tear gas. The capital of Ecuador has been shaken by the new day of unrest due to the austerity plan decided by President Moreno. Commercial activities closed their doors while police fired tear gas at protesters gathered around the Parliament building.

Human rights groups and protesters denounced police repression and urged the authorities to show restraint. The same police said on Twitter that the protests were not peaceful.

The clashes erupted before the scheduled start of the event to ask Moreno to repeal a law approved last week that puts an end to a fuel subsidy: a decision, that of the president, which is part of his efforts to curb the fiscal deficit after signing a $ 4.2 billion loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
