US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper called in a phone call on Thursday for his Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar to withdraw his troops from northern Syria. According to a Pentagon press release, the attack is likely to have "serious consequences for Turkey".

"Esper urged Turkey to interrupt its efforts in northeastern Syria, increasing the possibility that the US, Turkey and our partners can find a common way to step down the situation before it becomes impossible to resolve," the Pentagon writes in the press release.

According to the statement, Mark Esper has made it clear that Turkey's offensive risks destroying the progress made in the fight against the terrorist group IS.

Turkey argued that the effort is to fight the Kurdish YPG militia that the country has stamped terrorist.
