  • Ecuador: The indigenous people retain 31 journalists and 8 police in Quito

The ten police officers forcibly detained since the morning at the House of Culture of Quito were delivered last night (early morning in Spain) to the United Nations "in a gesture of goodwill," according to UN delegates. A group of indigenous people accompanied the uniformed men to the Simón Bolívar square, in the Alameda Park, while chanting "the united people will never be defeated"). There was no unanimity with the measure , which a part of those present reluctantly welcomed.

The thirty journalists who also remained against their will inside the Agora of the headquarters of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie) left the premises in the late afternoon; some slipped away, others left without more. The majority were forced to remain in the facilities against their will, as denounced by the professional associations. The Government had claimed their mid-afternoon freedom.

Worse luck ran Freddy Paredes, a Teleamazonas journalist assaulted by a stone in the head when in the vicinity of the House of Culture. The reporter blames the leaders of the Conaie, who instead claimed that the aggressor was not one of its members. The aggressor was identified as a correísta follower , employed in the National Electoral Council.

Some distension was lived like this at the end of the eighth day of protests and confrontations, during which the natives insisted on the repeal of the decree that imposes the rise in the price of fuels. However, the leaders of the Conaie have called to radicalize the conflict , after the death of Segundo Inocencio Tucumbí, one of his militants in Cotopaxi, whose burning chapel was veiled throughout the night in the House of Culture itself.

María Paula Roma, Minister of Interior, said Tucumbí died as a result of a fall and not of a blow or asphyxiation caused by tear gas. The Government recognizes four fatalities so far , three caused by falls and one by run over during the weekend in one of the indigenous blockades. More than a hundred policemen are also injured.

Instead, the Conaie ensures that three other bodies remain unidentified in hospitals.
