- Then we have made drastic decisions that go straight to the heart, says Jan Wernström.

Uppvidinge municipality is dragging itself along an economic uphill. For the politicians in the Children and Youth Committee, this means tough demands. The task of the City Council is to find savings of a total of SEK 10 million.

This has led to several criticized savings proposals, including closing down the upper secondary school and a preschool.

179 children without a cultural school

At Wednesday's meeting, politicians decided on another savings proposal - to close the cultural school. Something that would affect the 179 children, who in their spare time learn to play music, play theater or paint.

- Then we have made drastic decisions that go straight to the heart, says Jan Wernström.

The proposal means that the municipal council and then the municipal council can decide on a settlement. Something that would save the municipality around SEK 3.5 million a year.

Everyone reserved

But despite the fact that most politicians voted in favor of the closure proposal, they do not stand behind the proposal - all members reserved the decision.

- We would rather not close down the cultural school, says Jan Wernström.

Nevertheless, you present it as such a proposal. Why?

- It's pretty simple. There are no other options.

Hope it is closed down

According to him, there is nothing else to cut since all other activities are statutory. However, it is not mandatory for a municipality to have a cultural school.

Uppvidinge is also not unique. A report from the Culture Schools Council shows that half of the country's cultural schools have to cut back.

What do you hope happens to your proposal?

- That it is closed down.

The School of Culture employs eight full-time employees and a handful of part-time employees.
