The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday that this year's Peace Prize will be awarded to Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Prime Minister's Office comments that they are "a proud nation" and have now published a statement.

"Since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took over the political leadership in April 2018, he has made peace, forgiveness and reconciliation into important political elements in his administration," they write, among other things.

The Nobel Committee's motivation for the Peace Prize is that he has been a driving force in the historic peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

The statement from the Prime Minister's Office also states:

“Today, as the world recognizes and celebrates his accomplishments by giving him the Nobel Peace Prize, we invite all Ethiopians and Ethiopian friends to continue to stand on the side of peace. This victory and recognition is a collective victory for Ethiopians, and a call to strengthen our quest to make Ethiopia - the new horizon of hope - a successful country for all. ”
