At a shooting in the German city of Halle, at least two people were killed on Wednesday, the German police reported. Two suspects fled in a hijacked car. Another suspect was arrested after a major search.
The shooting took place around noon near a synagogue in the center of the city. On images you can see how a man wearing a helmet fires multiple shots.
The victims are a man and a woman, a police spokesperson reports to the AFP news agency. Two others were seriously injured.
Local residents are requested to stay indoors and to be vigilant. The police are currently hearing witnesses and the area is being combed out.
The police report that they are present in large numbers. The Halle train station is closed and the train traffic has stopped. The German federal police have intensified checks at train stations and airports in central Germany.

Investigation transferred to Federal Attorney General in Berlin
The investigation into the shooting was transferred by the police to the Federal Attorney General in Berlin, SPIEGEL reports. This happens more often when there are suspicions of terrorism.
With over 230,000 inhabitants, Halle is the largest city in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The city is located 35 kilometers northwest of Leipzig.
This Wednesday is the Yom Kipur, the Day of Atonement, which is considered to be one of the most important Jewish holidays. In nearby cities such as Leipzig, Dortmund and Dresden, the police have provided additional protection for the synagogues after the shooting.
