According to the German newspapers Middeldeutsche Zeitung and Bild, the shooting must have occurred at a synagogue. Halle police confirm that two people have died.
Several shots should have been fired and the suspected perpetrators should have moved from the scene in a car, reports the AP.
On his Twitter account, police are urging residents of the city to stay indoors. The central station in Halle has been closed off as a result of the police operation, says Deutsche Bahn on Twitter.
