In Enköping, where for many years they have been dragged with major problems with water shortages, they take their water from Enköpingsåsen.

In the neighboring town of Västerås, which takes its water from Lake Mälaren, the situation looks different.

In a few years, the Enköping residents can also access the Lake Mälar water from Mälarenergi through a line between the two cities. The City of Västerås and Enköping Municipality have signed up for a collaboration where they want to investigate the possibilities of building a new water pipe.

"This is a great way to create a sustainable drinking water supply for the municipality of Enköping in the future," says Danielle Littlewood, VA manager at Enköping Municipality.

To be ready by 2027

The hope is to be able to start construction in 2021, and that the new management will be completed by 2027. It will be drawn along the old Stockholm Road and the municipalities will meet on the border between Västmanland and Uppland at Sagån.

- Before we do, we must also agree on the terms of delivery for this water, says Danielle Littlewood.

The idea is that the water should be able to flow in both directions and in an emergency situation Västerås should also be able to get water from Enköping.

When the question comes up on the politicians' table is not yet clear. The water pipeline, together with a new wastewater treatment plant in Enköping, is estimated to cost Enköping municipality about SEK half a billion.
