Juist (dpa) - Are Paketdrohnen the solution for delivery traffic in inner cities? Five years after the first German scheduled flight of a delivery drone to the North Sea island of Juist, this is unlikely.

"Drones are a peripheral topic in the delivery of parcels," said a spokeswoman for the Federal Association of parcel and express logistics. Also for the mail carrier Deutsche Post DHL, which started the pilot test five years ago, Paketdrohnen remains "a pure research project".

In the fall of 2014, a DHL drone had regularly flown drugs to the East Frisian island of Juist for the first time. Since then, the deliverer has also been testing the technology in the Alps and on Lake Victoria in Africa. Especially for these remote areas drones could be a useful addition in the opinion of the Federal Association.

For German inner cities, however, other solutions are being discussed in the industry: more packing stations, for example, that could be hit by cargo bikes. Many logistics companies also want to purchase more electric vehicles.
