North Korea's envoy blamed the United States for failing to negotiate over Pyongyang's nuclear program, which resumed Saturday in Stockholm after months of deadlock.

"The negotiations did not satisfy our expectations and ultimately failed," Kim Myung-gil told reporters at his country's embassy in the Swedish capital.

The North Korean delegation arrived in Stockholm on Thursday for working-level talks on nuclear disarmament.

North Korea resumed missile tests after the collapse of the second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in February, after the US side rejected North Korea's demands to ease sanctions on a large scale in return for partial mitigation of its nuclear capabilities.

North Korea then stepped up its rhetoric and conducted several short-range missile tests, widely seen as an attempt to gain influence before a possible resumption of negotiations.

Parts of a ballistic missile fired by Korea landed from underwater on Wednesday inside Japan's exclusive economic zone, after Pyongyang had announced a successful ballistic missile test from a submarine.

Observers have seen North Korea's latest test as the most provocative since it resumed dialogue with Washington last year. UN Security Council resolutions prohibit Pyongyang from using ballistic missile technology.
