• Iraq: third day of protests, the revolt continues despite the curfew

04 October 2019The Iraqi security forces fired on dozens of protesters protesting corruption and unemployment in Baghdad for the fourth consecutive day. Security forces fired directly at demonstrators, not in the air. At the moment there are no reports of victims.

Since Tuesday, thousands of protesters clash with riot police and the army in the capital and southern cities of the country and so far more than 30 people have died, including two policemen. More than 1,400 injured.

The government has imposed an all-out curfew in the capital Baghdad and in the cities of Hillah, Najaf and Nassiriyah and has partially made the internet inaccessible, 75 percent, across the country. The clashes began in the country's capital, Baghdad, and in Nassiriya, where protesters took to the streets to protest unemployment and corruption of the political class, and in particular against Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who had been in office for about a year . The police reacted by using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and two people died, one in Baghdad and one in Nassiriya; there were also about 200 wounded.
