The life
Son of Francesco Pignatone, DC deputy in the 1950s, Giuseppe joined the magistracy in 1974 and after a brief period as a praetor in Caltanissetta, in 1977 he was transferred to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Palermo as a substitute, until he was appointed Deputy Prosecutor in 2000. where it stays until 2008.

Once the Palermo experience is concluded, Pignatone is appointed by the Superior Council of the Magistracy, Chief Prosecutor of Reggio Calabria. He holds a post until 2012 when, with a unanimous vote by the CSM, he is appointed to head the Rome prosecutor's office.

For his commitment against organized crime and in particular against the 'ndrangheta, Pignatone was the object of intimidation and threats, in particular on 5 October 2010 a bazooka was found, following an anonymous phone call, before the office of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Reggio C. addressed to the chief prosecutor.

The inquiries
In Palermo Pignatone collaborates for a long time with Pietro Grasso, then Chief Prosecutor (and former National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor), in the conduct of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. In the Sicilian capital he completes numerous investigations against Cosa Nostra by condemning various leaders and followers of Sicilian organized crime. Particularly in the 80s it contributes to the indictment of the former mayor Vito Ciancimino then convicted of Mafia. His signature also on the investigation leading to the arrest of Totò Cuffaro, then President of the Sicilian Region, then finally sentenced to 7 years for aggravated aiding and abetting at Cosa Nostra, as his is the coordination of the investigations that led to the arrest of the super-fugitive Bernardo Provenzano. Among the inquiries followed by Pignatone, also the one that led to shed light on the Capaci massacre and the one that brought the boss of the boss: Totò Riina.

In Calabria Pignatone continues its activity against organized crime and, among the most important operations carried out, the inquiry coordinated by two prosecutors (Reggio Calabria and Milan) stands out, which allowed to unveil the unitary character of the 'ndrangheta with organisms of vertex (similar to the dome of Cosa Nostra).
