Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno has decreed this Thursday, October 3 state of emergency throughout the territory. This measure will allow the mobilization of the military to face the strike of carriers trying to block the country.

Clashes erupt in Quito around roundabouts and barricades erected by taxi and bus drivers who used their vehicles to block the main avenues of the capital. Some residents are furious at not being able to travel otherwise than on foot or in private vans that charge their services at a high price.

Faced with this situation, the government has decided to cancel all classes on Thursday and Friday and establishes a state of emergency. This state of emergency makes it possible to establish security zones on the territory, to suspend or limit certain rights such as freedom of movement, to impose censorship on the media. It also makes it possible to mobilize the army and the police to ensure public order. The Constitution provides that the measure may remain in force for 60 days and be extended for a further period of 30 days.

The government has been the target of street anger since it decided Tuesday to end fuel subsidies. This measure should allow him to recover about two billion euros per year, but should cause prices to rise for almost all consumer products, says our correspondent in Quito, Eric Samson .

Trade unions and indigenous organizations are also on the war footing. They protest against reforms of the Labor Code, including the reduction of four to two weeks of holidays officials. Despite the mobilization of his political opponents close to former President Rafael Correa, President Moreno said economic measures will be fully maintained.
