“There are glimpses of common sense in our contacts with American colleagues and with Western colleagues (on the situation in the Middle East),” Lavrov said.

He noted that the United States "can be said through gritted teeth, but welcomed the agreements that were reached in the Astana format between the government and the Syrian opposition to create a constitutional committee and harmonize its rules and principles."

Earlier, Lavrov and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed in New York a wide range of issues, including the situation around Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.
