It is this Thursday morning October 3 that opens in Tunisia the official campaign for the second round of the presidential election. The poll, set for October 13, will see the academic Kais Saied and the imprisoned businessman Nabil Karoui clash. Proponents of the latter have indicated that they will not accept the holding of the vote if one of the two contenders is behind bars.

The continued detention of Nabil Karoui cast a shadow over the presidential election. Several members of his party's Qalb Tounes political bureau met on Wednesday (October 2nd). They openly questioned the holding of the second round if their protégé was still behind bars in eleven days.

And it is the ISIE, the body in charge of the poll, they hammered, find a solution quickly. This same body whose president has repeatedly demanded a release of Nabil Karoui to ensure the balance of opportunities of both candidates .

The situation is unprecedented, but does not call into question the electoral process according to the ISIE which emphasizes that the prison did not prevent Nabil Karoui from qualifying in the first round. The lawyers of the businessman are already preparing appeals to challenge in case of defeat, the results of the second round.

But by then, the country will have voted in decisive legislative elections this Sunday. A vote that could confirm the wind of disengagement that swept in the first round of the presidential election, the political class in place.
