The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on the United States and the United Nations to be transparent and fair in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on the eve of the first anniversary of his assassination at his country's consulate in Istanbul.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who again denied responsibility for the crime, should be held accountable in a statement to CBS, although the CIA report confirmed his responsibility, the commission said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia should not be allowed to cover up the crime, the world's fourth most censored country with at least 16 journalists, one of whom is a US citizen, the statement said.

Khashoggi was killed on October 2, 2018, inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, in a case that has shaken international public opinion and provoked widespread and unyielding condemnation to date.

In July, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights published a 101-page report by the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions Agnes Kalamar, in which Saudi Arabia was blamed for the deliberate killing of Khashoggi.

Kalamar confirmed that there was credible evidence requiring interrogation of senior Saudi officials, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Saudi judiciary
Meanwhile, Khashoggi's son Salah said he would be like his father and loyal to his homeland and would not accept to use his memory to harm them, while his fiancée said she would continue to seek justice for retribution from his killers.

Salah Khashoggi said in a tweet on the anniversary of his father's assassination that he reiterates what he said earlier that he has absolute confidence in the Saudi judiciary to achieve full justice against the perpetrators of the heinous crime, as he put it.

On the other hand, Khadija Genghis, Khashoggi's fiance, said in an article written for the Washington Post on the first anniversary of his assassination that impunity is totally unacceptable.

She said she had traveled the world in search of truth and demanded justice, but so far no single material step had been taken to punish the real perpetrators, although the international media continued to draw attention to the brutality of Khashoggi's murder.
