- We have said yes to four or five properties that are adjacent to Kungsådran, says Sebastian Olofsson, game manager at the county administrative board in Uppsala county.

Prior to the fall, Älvkarleby Sportfiske applied for shelter hunting, as they saw that a large number of gray herons were searching for food in the area. The anglers should also have seen that the number of caught sea trout has decreased, which has contributed to reduced revenue for both the club about fishing tourism in Älvkarleby.

- Usually they are put out smolt in the spring, but they avoided it because of the problems with the herons. Before the fall, Sportfisket had a number of sea trout smolts that they intended to put out but were afraid that the herons would eat up, says Sebastian Olofsson.

"Hard to scare"

The angling club has taken other measures - such as scarecrows and the presence of people - but without much success.

- Herons are quite difficult to frighten in general and can adapt quite quickly to the urban environment or get used to people, says Sebastian Olofsson.

The decision applies to a maximum of five gray herons in the Älvkarleby Fishery area and up to and including last November this year. The County Administrative Board's assessment is that the decision should not affect the gray heron's conservation status.

- There are quite a lot of gray herons and five are a relatively long number. We will see how the results will be, as always we will do an evaluation when the time for the shelter is over, says Sebastian Olofsson.
