19 May 2019 Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen met with Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) this morning to discuss the political crisis. At the end of the meeting, which lasted about an hour, Van der Bellen announced that the new elections will be held "in September, possibly at the beginning of the month".

The announcement after the storm that hit the far-right party FPÖ, forcing its leader Heinz-Christian Strache to resign as vice-chancellor Strache. The leader of the ultra right has been swept away by the scandal after the release of a video in which he promises public contracts for a self-styled Russian business woman.

The Austrian chancellor, the conservative Sebastian Kurz yesterday announced the end of his coalition with the FPÖ after 18 months with the government together.
