"History, even the painful one, is a teacher. The evil we have known can never be said to be defeated forever. The dangers reappear when the responsibility diminishes and the selfishness advances. This is also why the memory of Marzabotto and Monte Sole goes guarded, as has been done over the years by the most wounded communities: at the same time it must be transmitted to the youngest so that the values of peace and freedom are increasingly strengthened as a common heritage and as the fundamental basis of our social life ". This was stated by the president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, recalling the Marzabotto massacre.

"At 75 years of the immense extermination of women and men, children and the elderly, which the Nazi squads carried out in the area of the municipality of Marzabotto and in the territories on the slopes of Monte Sole - the head of state states - the Republic remembers the many innocent people killed, the atrocious pain of the survivors, that wound to humanity. his democracy responded by placing the person at the center, affirming the aspiration to peace and that of justice, respect for the inviolable rights of man and, at the same time, for the rights of the communities in which man is fulfilled. this popular redemption, from the rejection of hatred and the will to power, from resistance to the ideology of oppression and violence, Republican bases are inscribed in a national community linked by spirit or of solidarity, which knows how to recognize the common good, finding unity in decisive moments and becoming a promoter of peace and cooperation. No longer a nationalism that exacerbates the contrasts: so in the post-war Europe was born 'united in diversity'.
