29 September 2019 "In order to have a stronger economic and monetary union, we need a common budget for the euro area. Clearly the political debate on this issue still has a long way to go. But I am optimistic".

The president of the ECB, Mario Draghi, said in an interview with the Financial Times, calling a fiscal union "indispensable". Draghi expressed words of optimism because the attitude of public opinion towards economic integration changed after the Greek crisis.

"Many more people understand the importance of these reforms compared to a few years ago - he observed - and at a certain point there will be a commitment". And he added: "People have understood the advantages of the single currency, confidence is growing. Opponents of the euro have not been successful".

Draghi then stated that greater public spending "is more urgent than ever" to respond to the slowdown in global growth.
