Work began on the Haramain train in 2009, and was supposed to officially open in 2012, but it was postponed more than once, and began its first commercial flights in October 2018 from Medina to Jeddah.

The railway line cost 6.7 billion euros (7.3 billion dollars) and covers a distance of 450 kilometers and connects the cities of Mecca and Medina, the city of Jeddah overlooking the Red Sea.

The plant is part of efforts to boost tourism revenues in the kingdom, which is seeking to reduce its dependence on oil exports.
