Nuremberg (dpa) - Unemployment among the elderly over 55 is still on the decline in Germany.
This is evident from statistics provided by the Federal Employment Agency (BA). In August 2019, 495,768 men and women between the age of 55 and the respective retirement age were unemployed. The number has been decreasing since 2011. In 2014, the average for the year was 584,085.
People over the age of 55 and over are becoming more and more involved in working life, according to the BA. The employment rate for the 55-65 age group has risen faster over the past decade than for those aged 15-65. Added to this is the fact that more and more people remain in employment even after reaching retirement age - but then only as a marginal employee. The unemployed older people are for the most part skilled workers or even experts and German nationals.
