The Russian leader noted that Chirac "earned well-deserved respect of compatriots and high international authority as a wise and visionary statesman."

According to Putin, talking with a colleague, he “sincerely admired his intellect and vast knowledge, as well as the ability to make informed decisions even in the most difficult situations.”

Chirac, who led France from 1995 to 2007, died September 26, surrounded by relatives. He was 86 years old.
