BEIJING (Reuters) - Xiaomi has unveiled a new smartphone that has a unique design and specification, the Mi Mix Alpha, and may be the result of its efforts to develop a foldable phone, with a screen that surrounds the device on both sides.

According to Xiaomi, the screen-to-body ratio is 180.6%, and parts not covered by the screen are made of titanium used in aviation industries, which is lighter than stainless steel.

Although the phone is characterized by its peripheral screen, it has other unique features, most notably that it has a camera with a resolution of 108 megapixels can take pictures accurately 12032 × 9024 pixels.

It also has a second 20 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera with 1.5-cm super micro-imaging capabilities, and a third 12-megapixel remote camera with 2x optical zoom and high-speed focus.

The phone does not have a selfie camera, because it simply does not need one, as its cameras are at the front of the screen (because the phone screen surrounds it on both sides).

In contrast, in order to position the cameras, the company had to create a black strip extending from the top of the screen to the bottom along the left side to include the three cameras longitudinally, thus making the rear screen slightly smaller than the front screen.

Since the whole phone is almost a screen, it is natural that it does not have physical buttons (except for the power button on the top head), but in turn has a pressure-sensitive side that can be set virtual buttons on it.

Other components of the device also disappear under the screen, including a fingerprint reader and Acoustic technology that replaces the traditional speakers on the phone. Like the previous Mi Mix phone, Alpha also uses ultrasound for close-up sensing.

The MiX Alpha is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor and has 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage.

The phone supports 5G connections and is powered by a 4050 mAh battery with a capacity of 40 watts for fast charging.

Although the company describes the phone as a "concept phone" (concetp smartphone) - as can be seen from its announcement in the video above - and will not be widely available any time soon, but it also says that it has already entered the stage of "small-scale production", and put it for sale in But it did not say whether it would be available outside China at the same time.

If you are in China at the time and want to buy this phone, you must have a fat portfolio, as the price of 20,000 yuan (about 2810 dollars), which makes it more expensive than the Samsung foldable phone Galaxy Fold.

Engadget's technical website explains that the high price of the Mi Mix Alpha may be the result of its complex manufacturing process. It requires the manufacturer to place each layer on top of the other one by one, starting with its internal components, then its peripheral screen, touchpad and protective glass.
