“At present, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Karelia is checking the information published in a number of media on alleged violations of human rights in places of deprivation of liberty,” the statement said.

As Interfax clarifies, the agency said that all the facts stated in the media texts about torture and extortion of money from prisoners will be checked, studied, after which information will be issued “on all counts”.

In July, the Federal Penitentiary Service began testing because of a video about torture in a Yaroslavl colony.

In 2018, several criminal cases were instituted after the appearance in the media of a video of the beating of prisoner Yevgeny Makarov in colony No. 1 in Yaroslavl.
