In the event of the final adoption of the bill, law enforcement agencies will be able, without a court decision, to use the location data of mobile phones of missing citizens for their prompt search.

According to the website of the lower house of parliament, the initiative aims to simplify the search for disappeared people.

To request data on the mobile geolocation of the subscriber, the operator will need a reasoned decision of one of the heads of the internal affairs bodies.

Anatoly Vyborny, a member of the State Duma’s Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, noted that the timely establishment of the exact location of the missing would avoid many tragedies.

“In addition, this approach will save resources and significantly increase the efficiency and effectiveness of search work,” he said.

The initiative was sponsored by State Duma deputies and members of the Federation Council, including Valentina Matvienko, chairman of the upper house of the Russian parliament.

According to the explanatory note, about 120 thousand people disappear annually in Russia, of which about 45 thousand are children.

About 60 thousand people are declared wanted. About 90% of those missing at the time of disappearance carry a mobile phone.

Earlier, the State Duma approved a project on fines for violations of personal data storage.
