• Historical memory. Franco's options to avoid exhumation
  • UN.Pedro Sánchez says in New York that he will take to Spain the 'Green New Deal' of Ocasio-Cortez

At half past 10 in the morning, in the second speech of the UN General Assembly, Donald Trump took US domestic policy and the elections of that country held on November 3, 2020 to the largest forum for debate and world cooperation.

At a quarter to 9 at night, in one of the last speeches of the UN General Assembly, Pedro Sánchez led internal politics and the elections that Spain held on November 10 to the largest forum for debate and cooperation in the world.

The two followed the same pattern. First, a celebration of the importance of the international community and the challenges it faces. Then, a clear and direct message to your national electorate.

In the case of Sánchez, the line had its own name: Francisco Franco.

"Today, September 24, 2019, there has been a very important announcement. We have symbolically closed the democratic circle, as the Supreme Court of Spain has just authorized the exhumation of the dictator Franco of the public mausoleum in which he was buried with state honors ", said Sanchez at the UN, before riveting affirming that" today we close therefore a dark chapter of our history ". The president concluded his argument explaining that "no enemy of democracy deserves a place of worship or institutional respect."

Sanchez's speech about the grave in which, in his words, Francisco Franco has rested "immorally" seems to be the starting point for a strategy to mobilize the vote in October that the president considers critical for elections in those that abstention could harm the left rather than the right. The president of the Government insisted that Franco "collaborated with the Nazis in World War II" and "had kidnapped our country for almost 40 years."

Sanchez also opted for ideology by stating that "in our country a great revolution is brewing with force that will forever change our worldview: it is the fourth wave of feminism." In fact, the president declared himself "proud" of the "unstoppable progress of equality," which he summed up on two dates: "March 8 and the LGBTI Pride."

Beside the part dedicated to Franco, the rest of Pedro Sánchez's speech had less brightness. The president merely reviewed his cooperation and ecological transition agenda and celebrated multilateralism. There were no big announcements. It was, after all, a day in which the internal situation of the countries marked their speeches at the UN. After Sanchez, it was the turn of Boris Johnson, another leader marked by a date. Where appropriate, on October 31, the day on which Great Britain must leave the European Union.
