Riots are reported to have flared up in Wamena on the island of New Guinea in eastern Indonesia. They were accompanied by arsons of government buildings in protest of the discrimination against Papuan students that they allegedly suffered in other Indonesian provinces.

Papua Provincial Police Officer Ahmad Mustofa Kamal said 28 people died in Wamen, four more in Jayapur.

According to police, during the riots, protesters set fire to at least 150 shops, 80 houses and several government buildings.

In June, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred in the province of Papua in eastern Indonesia.
