On Tuesday, September 24, the British Supreme Court ruled " illegal " the decision of Prime Minister Boris Johnson to suspend Parliament. The latter is allowed to sit "as soon as possible ".

With our correspondent in London, Muriel Delcroix

The Supreme Court makes an absolutely extraordinary judgment. The 11 judges decided unanimously, which is very important, that the Prime Minister's advice to the Queen was illegal. This judgment is extremely strong.

For magistrates, the government's decision was made clearly to hinder Parliament's activities and prevent it from closely watching Brexit decisions.

The Supreme Court did not believe for a moment the justifications of Boris Johnson, who said he wanted to suspend Parliament to prepare the Queen's speech and present its political priorities.

As a result, the Supreme Court considers the suspension of Parliament to be null and void. For her, this means that Parliament has never been suspended. In fact, the two chambers can meet whenever they want and even immediately if necessary.

A stinging defeat

For Boris Johnson, this decision could not be worse. The Prime Minister is currently in New York as part of the UN General Assembly . We are waiting for his reaction.

Also to listen: Did Boris Johnson bury the British democracy?

Some commentators whisper that the prime minister should even be forced to resign after such disavowal. This scathing defeat is catastrophic for the conservative leader.

It comes as parliamentarians had adopted urgently, before the suspension on September 9 , a law that requires Boris Johnson has requested a postponement of Brexit in case of absence of agreement with Brussels. A postponement scenario that Boris Johnson categorically excludes.
