September 23, 2019 Sixty-six states have joined the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The United Nations announced today, just before the opening of their climate summit, in New York. These 66 countries are added to 10 regions, 102 cities and 93 companies that are committed to achieving the "zero emissions" target by the middle of the century; a goal set by scientists to contain global warming, within the limits set by the 2015 Paris agreement.

"The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but we can win it," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The summit began at 4 pm (Italian time). Among other UN announcements: 68 countries have pledged to formally revise their climate plans by 2020, when the 195 signatories to the Paris agreement should present new commitments. Furthermore, 30 countries are now joining an alliance that promises to stop building coal-fired power plants by 2020.

"Italy is fully committed to implementing the Paris agreement: through the reorientation towards renewable energies, we have reduced the cumulative emissions by Co2 260 million above our objective" the Farnesina communicated in a tweet.

Russia ratifies the Paris agreement
The Russian Prime Minister, Dmitri Medvedev, has announced that he has signed the resolution for the ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change. "It is important that our country participates in this process," he said in a meeting with the vice premier, "the threat of climate change could compromise the environmental balance, jeopardizing the successful development of many key sectors, such as agriculture, and above all the security of our people who live on permafrost and increase natural disasters ". Medvedev then reported that he had already ordered regulations to adapt the Paris Agreement to Russian law. According to Deputy Prime Minister Aleksei Gordeyev, the document will be ready by 2020.
