Seven students at a Nairobi primary school were killed and dozens injured in the collapse of their classroom Monday morning, officials said.

Rescuers search the rubble for survivors . "Until then, we can confirm that we have seven dead and 57 others (schoolchildren) were hospitalized," said government spokesman Cyrus Oguna, speaking at the scene of the tragedy. Hundreds of people in Dagoretti, a poor area where people live in makeshift shelters, gathered around the site where rescuers searched the rubble for survivors.

According to an AFP journalist on site, offices and books were scattered amid the debris of this semi-permanent structure, made of wood and sheet metal. The whole had been partly over-raised to add a floor.
The building collapsed shortly after 07:00 (04:00 GMT), as the children entered the school. "Seven dead students, several injured after the collapse of a classroom at the (Precious) Talent Academy in Dagoretti," in the west of the Kenyan capital, reported on Twitter the organization St John Ambulance involved in relief operations.
