Iranian President Hassan Ruhani wants to present a peace plan for the Strait of Hormuz at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York. Ruhani announced on Sunday at a military parade in Tehran the initiative "Coalition of Hope" for the Persian Gulf. Iran wants to ensure the safety of shipping in the Persian Gulf with a coalition of the Gulf States and without foreign powers.
"The outside interference is problematic and dangerous for the Persian Gulf," Ruhani said. The question should be settled regionally. For this Iran is ready to settle all differences with the Gulf States. Tehran wanted friendship and brotherhood with all the states of the region and "extend his hand," said the president. The speech of Ruhnai in New York is scheduled for Wednesday.
Ruhani calls for "internal security strategy"
Ruhani reiterated that Iran did not want a military conflict. "But we are a people of resistance and not surrender ..., so we will reciprocate a military aggression against our country consistently," said the President. Wherever the US intervened, say in Afghanistan, Iraq or Syria, Ruhani's words led to more insecurity. The region therefore needs an "internal security strategy".
In the past few months there have been frequent problems in the Persian Gulf and especially on the Strait of Hormuz. The strait transports almost a third of world oil exports. The background is the conflict between the USA and Iran. The US imposed sanctions on Iran's oil export this spring. Exports of oil are the country's main source of income.
Since the United States unilaterally ended its nuclear deal with Iran over a year ago, tensions between Washington and Tehran have continued to grow. The US wants to use sanctions and a policy of "maximum pressure" to persuade Iran to agree to a new agreement with more stringent conditions and stop supporting terrorist groups in the region.
The US and Saudi Arabia also see Iran as the author of the attack on important oil facilities in Saudi Arabia on 14 September. Indeed, the Iran-backed Huthi rebels were known in Yemen. Tehran denies participation.
Threat with the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz
"If one day the US really blocks the Iranian oil export, then no more oil will be exported to the Persian Gulf," Ruhani said last year. At the same time he threatened indirectly with a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. In July, Iran seized a British oil tanker in the Gulf. To date, this has not been released.
Since the incident, there have been discussions about an international military mission for safe navigation on the Persian Gulf and against Iran's military influence. The US has strengthened its military presence in the region.
With major military parades, Iran reminded nationwide on Sunday of the 39th anniversary of the war against Iraq (1980-1988). The anniversary of the military invasion of the then Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein is celebrated in Iran every year on September 22 as the "Day of Holy Defense." In the capital Tehran, the parade took place at the mausoleum of the revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. During a parade on the Persian Gulf, the Air Force and Navy displayed their fighters, helicopters and warships and speedboats.
Keynote speaker of the parade in the port city Bandar Abbas was Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani. "The Iranian armed forces will not allow a US adventure policy in the Persian Gulf," said Larijani, according to the news agency Isna. He also called on the Arab Gulf States, along with Iran, to ensure the safety of the Gulf.
