American Josef Newgarden (Penske) was crowned IndyCar champion for the second time in his career Sunday at the end of the Monterey Grand Prix, the last race of the season.
Simon Pagenaud (Penske), who was also eligible for the second time after 2016, finished the season in 2nd place, after a race won by American rookie Colton Herta (Harding Steinbrenner), who was in pole position and leader all the way.
But the Frenchman, who finished in 3rd place on the Laguna Seca circuit, can be consoled for having won the most prestigious event, the 500 Miles of Indianapolis.
In Monterey, where he had never raced before, Newgarden, 28, a leader in the overall standings before the race, assumed his favorite status without taking any risks considered given his comfortable lead in the overall standings before this final event.
He finished in 8th place. Sufficient to allow him to keep his chair in front of Pagenaud so, who fails to 25 points, and the American Alexander Rossi who completes the podium of the season.
