The Congolese army announced Wednesday it had killed Sylvestre Mudacumura, the supreme commander of the Hutu militia in eastern DRC.
The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) has a new leader. This is Pacific Ntawunguka. This major-general replaces Sylvestre Mudacumura , who the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) claimed to have killed in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, 18 September.
For Chrispin Mvano, researcher in Goma, his appointment is not a surprise. " He was trained as a specialist in war helicopters," he recalls. He played several command roles within the FDLR for a long time before Sylvestre Mudacumura's death. He was the second commander. So it's not surprising that he is the commander replacing Sylvestre Mudacumura. "
This Hutu militia has been raging for 25 years in eastern DRC. " Since their creation, there have been divisions within the FDLR, explains the researcher. The last date of 2016, when the vice president of the movement, Wilson Irategeka, recovered the group to create his parallel group. But despite all these divisions, it is a movement that remains nevertheless welded on the ideological plane, on the objective plane. So everyone is waiting. "
