June 17, 2019 Former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi died after suffering an illness in court. The Egyptian state television reported.

Egyptian state media reported that Morsi collapsed after appearing in the court and later died. Egyptian state television reported that former president Mohamed Morsi died of "heart attack in court". A banner states that the body was taken "to the hospital". Sources in Cairo report reinforced security measures already visible on the streets.

The former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood was elected president after the 2011 Arab Spring which put an end to the regime of President Hosni Mubarak, which lasted a full thirty years. Following this, the Morsi government was deposed in a military coup in July 2013. The Muslim Brotherhood movement was outlawed and the former president put in jail.

Erdogan: Morsi is a martyr
The former Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, who died after an illness in court, is a "martyr". Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has always been his supporter, called him "our brother Morsi" and offered his condolences to the family of the former leader of Cairo and to the Egyptian people.

UN calls for independent investigation
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an "independent investigation" into the death of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi. "At every sudden death in detention," said the spokesman of the High Commission, Rupert Colville, "must follow an immediate, impartial, accurate and transparent investigation, conducted by an independent body to clarify the cause of death."
