Al-Jazeera correspondent said that demonstrations took place in the cities and towns of the Syrian province of Idlib to condemn what it described as the international inability to protect civilians, following calls from civil and popular activities to protest against the Russian and Chinese veto against a draft Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire.

Thousands went out in Idlib after Friday prayers, calling on the international community to stop attacks by the regime and Russia, and raised banners calling for the release of detainees.

At an open session of the Security Council on Thursday, the Russian-Chinese veto blocked a tripartite draft resolution submitted by Kuwait, Germany and Belgium demanding that member states ensure compliance with their obligations under international law when fighting terrorism, as well as calling on all parties to cease hostilities to avoid deteriorating humanitarian situation in Idlib.

The Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebizia, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Council, said that the aim of the draft resolution is to save those who he called terrorists in Idlib with international support before the Syrian regime to defeat them.

Earlier this month, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said more than 1,000 civilians had been killed in Idlib in the past four months, while half of the province's schools were destroyed.

She explained that half of those killed were women and children, and called on the actors in Syria to stop what she called the massacre there.
