Professor Peter Urin said swelling of the tongue is a very unpleasant health problem, as it hinders breathing and swallowing food.

The mouth and dental surgeon explained that the swelling of the tongue occurs as a result of a fluid accumulation of tissue, noting that it is usually accompanied by redness and a white layer with the feeling of pain and numbness.

Swelling of the tongue has several causes, notably burning due to eating hot foods or drinks, infections such as gingivitis, or allergic responses to certain foods.

In any case, the doctor should be consulted immediately to identify and treat the real underlying cause of the swelling of the tongue.

In general, the German professor stressed the importance of caring for the hygiene of the tongue as well; it should be cleaned regularly to remove the white layer accumulated by abrasive tongue or toothbrush with soft bristles.
