The Afghan government will not receive nearly $ 100 million to finance an energy infrastructure project, as well as another 60 million direct grants. The amount is paltry compared to the more than $ 1 trillion spent by the United States in Afghanistan since its intervention in 2001.

Retaliation

Washington's decision is symbolic, but the message sent to the Afghan government raises many questions about the innuendo of such action and remarks at eight days before the presidential election. Afghanistan is among the most corrupt countries in the world, ranking 172nd out of 180 in the Transparency International rankings.

Why is the United States choosing to publicly point to the Afghan government's inability to fight corruption? According to some observers, this is a retaliatory action by US authorities against Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. He has been among the most fervent critics of the Taliban-American agreement in principle. An agreement canceled by Donald Trump. He had made the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan a key element of his presidential campaign .
