After marathon talks started Thursday evening, parties in the government coalition led by Angela Merkel have finally agreed on a climate strategy allowing Germany to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 by 55% compared to 1990. The parties supporting Angela Merkel worked part of the night and the morning to resolve the latest disagreements.

" There is an agreement with a lot of measures and an annual verification mechanism " to ensure that the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions will be achieved, sources close to the government told AFP. The details of the compromise, reached after some 18 hours of bitter discussions, are unveiled at a press conference on Friday, September 20th. Before, it must be adopted in the Council of Ministers.

The challenge is to take action - up to 100 million euros of investment - to encourage Germans to reduce their pollutant emissions, and allow the country, today behind, to achieve its objectives in this regard .

The announcement comes as tens of thousands of protesters , 80,000 according to the organizers, had gathered in Berlin at the emblematic Brandenburg Gate, on this day of a global strike action for climate protection. The mobilization should be particularly well followed in Germany, where environmentalists have the wind in their sails and chain electoral success.
