Tunisia's former dictator Zine al Abidine Ben Ali has died in Saudi Arabia.

"Ben Ali recently died in Saudi Arabia," the president's lawyer Mounir Ben Salha told Reuters news agency on Thursday.

The task is confirmed by Tunisia's foreign ministry, AFP reports.

The popular revolt in Tunisia in 2011 led to Zine al Abidine Ben Ali being ousted from power and forced to leave the country.

The revolt, which actually started in late 2010, gained momentum when young vegetable trader Mohamed Bouazizi set fire to himself in protest against unemployment.

Zine al Abidine Ben Ali turned 83 years old.
