Singapore (AP) - For Formula 1 driver Nico Hülkenberg, the chance of a change to the Haas racing team has been smashed. The US team confirmed in Singapore the renewal of the contracts with the regular drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen.
Previously, the Rhinelander Hülkenberg had been traded for a cockpit at Haas. The 32-year-old has to leave Renault after three years at the end of the season and will be replaced by Frenchman Esteban Ocon. After the decision at Haas, the options of Hülkenberg for a future in Formula 1 disappear.
"If I want, I can get a racing seat and I'm also there," Hülkenberg had recently said on RTL and n-tv. There was "definitely interest and options," the veteran assured. However, a number of teams have already confirmed their occupations for 2020. Hülkenberg currently contests his ninth season in the premier class.
Haas has long been speculated that the explosive partnership with the Frenchman Grosjean and the Dane Magnussen will be ended. The duo had repeatedly come into the enclosure on the track and had to be reprimanded by team boss Günter Steiner.
But after the sudden withdrawal of the title sponsor Haas is now on continuity in the driver's question. For Grosjean and Magnussen it will be the fourth joint Formula 1 season at Haas.
