Today, around 108 million people need humanitarian efforts. But with a changing climate, new disasters will arise.

In the Red Cross's new report "The cost of doing nothing", the organization warns that by 2030 aid needs will rise to almost SEK 200 billion every year.

Damage can be prevented

In the report, the Red Cross writes:

"We can't do anything about storms, cyclones, heat waves and other climate and weather-related threats, but we can prevent the damage."

The Red Cross proposes major efforts to prevent future disasters in countries that are at risk for climate-related disasters.

Rail costs can be cut

“Climate change poses a double threat to vulnerable communities. They lead to recurring and more intense and unpredictable events such as flooding, drought and extreme heat, ”writes the Red Cross.

With the right efforts now, the costs of emergency intervention can be cut by up to 90 percent, the organization believes.

Therefore, not doing anything now risks becoming expensive in the future.
