Neil Parker , an Australian hiker, has been rescued on Wednesday after falling down a six-meter waterfall and crawling through the undergrowth for two days, after breaking a leg and a wrist in Queensland , a state in northeastern Australia .

After losing his phone in the accident he decided that his best chance to be rescued was to crawl into a stream that was nearby. As reported by local television network ABC, the 54-year-old man fell on Sunday. "It was two days of fighting," he said.

Parker, an experienced hiker, had packed first aid supplies , including bandages that he combined with hiking poles to splint his leg. The man, who worked as a guide for the city of Brisbane , went to a visible area near Mount Nebo , northwest of Brisbane.

Helicopter rescue

"Immediately, I thought: 'I'm in big trouble because nobody knows where I am.' I knew I would have to get out of the rocks to be seen," he added. Parker was detected from a rescue helicopter and subsequently transferred to a hospital.

"He was advancing about a meter or a meter and a half and had to stop and take a break, " he told reporters from his hospital bed Wednesday.

"I just couldn't believe it. I traveled only three kilometers, but it took me two days . I thought it would never come, it was a journey that would normally have taken me 40 minutes," he said. Parker had painkillers and water with him, but his food was limited to nuts, sweets and an energy bar.

The man has explained that he had to fight "centimeter by centimeter" to get to the stream, hampered by the injuries he had on opposite sides of his body. I had to carry my leg, and the legs weigh a lot when they are deadlifts. He tried to lift it and pass a rock and then use the other elbow and the other arm, "he said.

For his part, the man has expressed that thinking about his family gave him the mental strength necessary to move forward: "I wanted to be close to my children."

Orthopedic surgeon Nicola Ward has told ABC that Parker is "extremely well." " I had never heard of any survival effort with two broken limbs

", he said, specifying that Parker faces at least eight weeks of recovery.
