"With this app we finally get into the same league as our competitors." This is how blunt the president of the Guild Taxi Association of Madrid, Miguel Ángel Leal, shows about the new application for the taxi service that will allow users to share a vehicle and know the fare before hiring the service.

The app, which can not yet provide the name "for marketing reasons", will arrive in Madrid around the second half of October "with the intention of expanding to other Spanish and even European cities," according to Leal.

The president has detailed that this technological implement will have a closed price and a modern and intuitive interface. As he explains, it will differ from its competitors because of its facet of "social network" and because it will offer the possibility of a "shared service" , that is, that "users can indicate their trip as 'open', in order to share it with others and reduce the price. "

Around 8,000 taxis in the capital , more than half of Madrid's licenses, will start with the application at its launch, which will guarantee "a collection service in a very small time".

With the intention of "attracting especially young people", but keeping the old ways of taking a taxi, such as "the raised hand" or the usual "stops", the intention of the app is to be a "necessary modernization", in in line with the studies of the Taxi Association of Madrid that predict a "60% of taxi services contracted via the app in the next five years".

Regarding the technical details, "the technology and design are in charge of a leading German company expert in applications in the transport sector and with more than 150 million users," said the Guild.

In addition, Leal has stressed that its use by drivers will be "minimal" because "they will only have to download the application and everything will be managed from it", although the president has warned that yes "there will be a quality requirement that proves that the driver will give adequate sevice. "

On the economic side, the Taxi Guild association foresees a profit increase of 8 to 12% for taxi drivers who use the new app in Madrid, and soon "in more cities."

In relation to the new expansions, from inside and outside the country, the Association "will try to make compatible the other collection systems that professionals have".

The presentation of the app "will be in a very short time", and from the Taxi Guild Association are optimistic and "excited" with the data collected after the pilot tests already carried out in Madrid.

A new legal framework that they rejected

The arrival of this new application takes place after the confrontation of the taxi sector with the drivers of Driver Transport Vehicles (VTC), which kept thousands of taxi drivers in Spain on strike for weeks.

Taxi drivers then claimed, among other issues, that VTCs could not pre-contract or have a closed price , as they can now offer with the app.

The strike resulted in a municipal Ordinance, by the City Council of Carmena, which severely restricted the performance of the VTC , and was very supported by taxi drivers.

After the elections, the new government of Martínez Almeida launched another municipal Ordinance, the current one. This new standard is what allows the pre-contracting of the service or the setting of a closed price in taxis .
